Strengthening the parent-baby bond and family functioning in the NICU is the “next big frontier” in improving infant outcomes and supporting NICU parents is equally as important as it is to providing medical care to their baby.
In January 2017, Patient+Family Care entered a collaborative venture with The National Perinatal Association and The Preemie Parent to develop an online NICU Staff Education Course entitled “Caring for Babies and Their Families: Providing Psychosocial Support in the NICU.”
This education is the first of its kind because it has been created by both professionals AND parents together.
There are seven Lessons and nursing participants will be awarded 7 CEU’s upon completion. Topics include:
communication between providers and parents
providing emotional support to parents
how to involve parents in the developmental care of their babies
the importance of peer to peer support
best practices for palliative and bereavement care
how to support parents in discharge planning and preparation
how to support NICU staff and reduce risk for burnout and fatigue
It is our combined hope that NICU departments will take the course together to transform the culture of their NICU towards truly providing comprehensive family support. NICU leaders can request this education in bulk (and at a discounted rate) for entire departments to participate at once.
The course is also available to individual NICU providers, (RNs, MDs, and all other NICU multidisciplinary support staff) and anyone can enroll in this course independently.
